- Martin Luther was enthusiastic about his music
- “God has His Gospel preached through the medium of music; this may be seen from the compositions of Josquin, all of whose works are cheerful, gentle, mild, and lovely; they flow and move along and are neither forced nor coerced and bound by rigid and stringent rules, but, on the contrary, are like the song of the finch.” - Martin Luther
Ave Maria...virgo serena (Hail, Mary...Serene Virgin)
- Four-voice motet
- Prayer set to delicate and serene music
- Opening section utilizes polyphonic imitation
- Short melodic phrase "Ave Maria" is presented by soprano voice and then imitated by the alto, tenor, and bass
- The next two words, "gratia plena", (full of grace), have a different melody and are also passed from voice to voice
- Each voice enters while the preceding one is in the middle of its melody, which creates a feeling of continuous flow
- Melody for opening phrases was adapted from a Gregorian chant
- The rest of Ave Maria was not based on a chant melody
Polyphony in Renaissance Music
- Use of polyphonic imitation
- Use of duple and triple meter
- Changes in rhythmic animation can reflect different emotions
- Each singer must maintain an individual rhythm
- Pitch patterns are usually easy to sing, moving along a scale with few large leaps

- Motet is a polyphonic choral work set to a sacred Latin text other than the "ordinary" of the mass
