What is scheduling?

Scheduling is to allocate resources to production orders and sequence orders on each resource with an aim to ensure that all orders can be completed to meet some predefined objectives (e.g. minimise tardiness, lead time, etc).

Why is scheduling important in real practice?

It is important in a sense that scheduling helps realise and support the MRP planning by meeting quantities (number of components to be made) and time requirements (by when) for MRP. Without scheduling, MRP is just a plan. Hence, scheduling does support the transformation from planning into action that can be physically executed at the shop floor level (e.g. decide what resource is needed for each component and the processing order).

Differentiate between assignment and sequencing

Assignment is about how to allocate resources to operations while sequencing is about deciding the order in which operations should be performed at each resource. They are interrelated as assignment affects how sequencing can be done and sequencing can also tell how good the assignment is.

What is linear programming (LP)?

LP can be used to support decision-making for resource allocation by formulating decisions as binary variables (i.e. yes or no, 0 or 1). Hence, variable Xij = 1 if resource i is assigned to task j, otherwise Xij = 0.
Signup and view all the answers
