Study Notes
Christ's Names Prove He is God's Son
- Jesus is the Word (John 1:1-3, 14) revealing God's mind and heart. As the Alpha and Omega (Revelation 22:13), He spells out God's love for us.
- Jesus is the Light (John 1:4-13), the source of all light, in contrast to darkness (Satan). Just as light overcomes darkness, salvation enters the sinner’s heart.
- Jesus is the Son of God (John 1:15-18, 30-34, 49), a claim that led to persecution. Seven individuals in John's Gospel acknowledge Him as the Son of God, including John the Baptist and Peter.
- Jesus is the Christ (John 1:19-28, 35-42), the Messiah, the Anointed One, eagerly awaited by the Jews, including the Samaritans.
- Jesus is the Lamb of God (John 1:29, 35-36), fulfilling the role of the sacrificial lamb foreshadowed in Old Testament sacrifices. Unlike Old Testament sacrifices, Christ's blood takes away sin completely for the whole world.
- Jesus is the King of Israel (John 1:43-49). Even though many wished for a king to free them from Roman rule, the chief priests rejected Jesus as their king.
- Jesus is the Son of Man (John 1:50-51), a title taken from Daniel 7:13-14, signifying His divine nature. He is the bridge between Heaven and earth, making God known and bringing humanity to God.
Christ's Works Prove He is God's Son
- Jesus created the world (John 1:1-4), acting as God's divine agent.
- Jesus gives men salvation (John 1:9-13), a free gift received through belief and acceptance. New birth comes from God, not from human effort.
- Jesus reveals God (John 1:15-18), presenting God's grace and truth, while Moses revealed the law that reveals sin and condemns.
- Jesus baptizes with the Spirit (John 1:33), showing the Trinity: Father, Son, and Spirit. The Holy Spirit’s presence confirmed Christ's identity to John.
- Jesus has intimate knowledge of men (John 1:42, 47-48), seeing into their hearts, a divine attribute.
- Jesus forgives sin (John 1:29), a power beyond human capability.
- Jesus opens the way to heaven (John 1:50-51), becoming the staircase to glory, offering salvation and access to Heaven.
Witnesses Prove That Christ Is God's Son
- John the Baptist (John 1:7, 15, 29) is one of the key witnesses who baptized Jesus.
- John the Apostle (John 1:14): "We beheld His glory..."
- The Old Testament prophets (John 1:30, 45) anticipated Christ's coming.
- The Holy Spirit (John 1:33-34) identified Christ to John.
- Andrew (John 1:41), a soul-winner, found Christ through John the Baptist.
- Philip (John 1:45) supported his testimony with Scripture.
- Nathanael (John 1:49) found Christ through the Word and Philip's witness.
These witnesses had personal encounters with Christ and suffered for their faith. Their testimonies are credible and trustworthy.
