Jesus and the Demon-Possessed Man

  • Jesus traveled to the region of the Gerasenes across the lake.
  • A man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet Jesus, having lived in the tombs and being uncontainable by chains.
  • The man was strong, breaking chains and irons, and would cry out and cut himself with stones day and night.
  • When he saw Jesus, he ran and fell on his knees, shouting "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?" and begged not to be tortured.
  • Jesus commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man, and the spirit replied "My name is Legion, for we are many."
  • The demons begged Jesus to send them into a nearby herd of pigs, about 2,000 in number, which then rushed down a steep bank into the lake and drowned.
