Arrival in Capernaum
- Jesus concluded his discourse to the people and went to Capernaum.
- A highly valued servant of a centurion was sick and about to die.
- The centurion heard about Jesus and sent some Jewish elders to ask Him to heal his servant.
- Jesus went with the Jewish elders, but the centurion, not wanting to trouble Jesus, sent friends to ask Him to simply say the word and his servant would be healed.
- Jesus marveled at the centurion's great faith and healed the servant.
Jesus Heals a Widow's Son
- Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain.
- As He approached the town gate, He saw a dead man being carried out, the only son of his mother, who was a widow.
- Jesus had compassion on her and said, "Do not weep." He then touched the coffin and the dead man sat up and began to speak.
- A sense of awe swept over the crowd and they glorified God, recognizing a great prophet had appeared among them.
- The news about Jesus spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding region.
John’s Disciples Question Jesus
- John’s disciples informed him about all these things.
- John called two of his disciples and sent them to ask Jesus, "Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?"
- Jesus healed many people of their diseases, afflictions, and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind.
- He told John’s disciples to report back to John what they had seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.
Jesus Speaks About John the Baptist
- Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John the Baptist.
- He said that John was a great prophet, but even the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
- All those who heard this, even the tax collectors, acknowledged God’s justice, for they had received the baptism of John.
- But the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.
A Sinful Woman Anoints Jesus
- One of the Pharisees invited Jesus to eat with him.
- When a sinful woman from that town learned that Jesus was dining there, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume.
- She stood behind Him at His feet weeping, wetting His feet with her tears and wiping them with her hair. Then she kissed His feet and anointed them with the perfume.
- The Pharisee who had invited Jesus was shocked, but Jesus used this opportunity to teach a lesson about forgiveness and love.
- He compared the woman to a debtor who was forgiven a large debt and the Pharisee to a debtor who was forgiven a small debt.
- Jesus said that the one who was forgiven more would love more. He then told the woman that her many sins had been forgiven, for she had loved much.
The Importance of Faith
- Jesus told the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
