Study Notes
Hindi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by over 580 million people worldwide and serves as one of India's official languages. Its grammatical structure includes several features common among Indic languages, such as gender and number distinctions in pronouns, noun classes, and verb conjugations based on person, tense, mood, voice, aspect, and number. Additionally, it follows Sanskrit word order rules, where subject comes before object and modifier after modified in clauses. There are several regional variations within Hindi which fall into two main categories: Western dialects (Kaithi) and Eastern dialects (Devnagri). Despite its many regional differences, standard Hindi literature uses Devnagari script.
Historically, Hindi evolved from Old Indo-Aryan languages such as Vedic Sanskrit. It has been influenced by Arabic, Persian, Greek, Latin, and English during different phases of Indian history, particularly through trade and conquest. Today, Hindi has a mix of vocabulary and sentence structures taken from various sources, including Sanskrit, Prakrit, Apabhramsha, Pali, Persian, French, and English. Aside from being used as a medium of communication, Hindi also plays significant roles in politics, religion, art, culture, and education across India.
