The Sunnah

Sources of Shari’ah
- Qur’an: the word of God revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), revealed over 23 years in stages and intervals
- Sunnah: the authentic statements, actions, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad
- Ijma’ (Consensus): teachings agreed upon by early generations of Muslims or Muslim scholars
- Ijtihad (Juristic Decision): applied by the Mujtahid (Muslim Jurist/Scholar) when answers are not clear-cut from the Qur’an or Sunnah
Sharīʿah
- Set of rules that includes obligations, prohibitions, recommended duties, and detested actions
- Covers ethics, manners, laws, public life, social life, economic life, politics, and more
- Includes Islamic worship, family relations, inheritance, commerce, property law, and more
Categories of Sharīʿah
- ʻIbadaat: based on the individual's direct relationship with God, including prayers, fasting, pilgrimage, etc.
- Muʻamalaat: refers to conduct with fellow human beings, including law, work, marriage, inheritance, business transactions, etc.
