    Islamic Civilization Overview

The spread of Islam began around the time of Muhammad's death in AD 632, when his followers undertook a series of military conquests known collectively as the Muslim Conquests. This rapid expansion enabled the religion to establish itself throughout parts of Europe, North Africa, and Asia within just over two centuries. By the early ninth century, most of the Middle East was controlled by Arab-speakers, who were guided by religious law. In addition to this vast geographical extent, Islamic culture also influenced many other regions, notably those in which it established a lasting cultural foothold.

One key aspect of Islamic civilization is its organizational structure through caliphs—successors to Mohammed appointed by him during his lifetime. These caliphs ruled from their capital city at Medina until they moved their government to Damascus in Syria later in history. Two major types of caliphs emerged after Muhammad’s death; Umayyads and Abbasids. Both these dynasties had significant effects on the direction of Islam, with the former favoring secular power and the latter attempting to restore spirituality to Islam.

During the rule of both types of calips, there were numerous accomplishments and contributions made towards establishing a strong Islamic empire. Some notable achievements included a sophisticated agricultural system, large cities and urban centers, highly developed trade networks, advances in architecture and town planning, growth in science and technology, increased knowledge of trades such as glassmaking, pottery production, textiles manufactory, metalworking, and shipbuilding.

While caliphal rule lasted only till the thirteenth century, several important results remain today:

    • A stretch of history where Arabs proved themselves capable rulers of non-Arab territories and populations.
    • A period of non-Roman administration of areas between China and Germany.
    • An age that saw Persia, Egypt, Iraq, Arabia and Spain receive new vitality.
    • Landmarks like Baghdad, Cordoba, Samarkand, and Herat have become famous in Western literature due to their importance in human history.

In summary, Islamic civilization has left a profound impact on world history, developing into a powerful political and cultural force that shaped much of medieval society while contributing significantly to art and literature among various cultures across different continents.
