Which of the following represents the broadest (most inclusive) taxonomic rank?

  • Class
  • Phylum
  • Domain (correct)
  • Kingdom

What is the primary purpose of using 'nested groups' in the classification of organisms?

  • To randomly assign organisms into groups for study purposes.
  • To obscure the evolutionary relationships between species.
  • To reflect the relatedness of species by organizing them into increasingly specific groups. (correct)
  • To simplify the identification of new species.

If two organisms are in the same Class, which of the following taxonomic levels MUST they also share?

Study Notes

Taxonomy

  • Taxonomy is a way to mark the relatedness of organisms by putting them into small groups, then putting several small groups together in a larger group; these are called nested groups.
  • Cities, counties, and states are an example of nested groups.
  • The most common set of nested groups is called taxonomy.
  • The largest of these groups is the Domain.
  • Beneath each Domain are Kingdoms.
  • In each Kingdom there are many Phyla.
  • Each Phylum contains many Classes.
  • This extends all the way down to each Genus containing many Species.
  • During an exercise, the taxonomy of different common animals will be researched focusing on Kingdom, Phylum, and Class.
