Learning Outcomes

  • Define stem cells
  • Demonstrate the structure of stem cells
  • Determine types of stem cells

Stem Cells and Tissue Renewal

  • There are 3 types of cells in the body classified according to their capacity for regeneration

Cell Classification

  • Non-Renewing Cells: cannot divide and are not replaced by new cells after death (e.g. nerve cells, cardiac muscle)
  • Potentially Renewable Cells: normally not dividing, but can divide and restore their normal number at a time of need (e.g. endocrine cells, liver cells)
  • Continuously Renewing Cells: unable to divide, but when they die, they are replaced by Stem Cells of the same family

Stem Cell Definition

  • Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can differentiate into specialized cell type(s)
