Study Notes
Spectroscopy Introduction
- Spectroscopy is the study of the interaction between electromagnetic radiation (EMR) and organic compounds, aiming to identify organic structures.
- The technique has several advantages, including being rapid, effective even at small quantities (mg or μg), reproducible in certain types, and accurate.
Spectroscopic Techniques
- Various spectroscopic techniques are used to study organic compounds, including: • Infrared spectroscopy • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (H1, C13) • Mass spectroscopy • Ultraviolet spectroscopy
Types of Transitions
- There are three types of transitions that occur in spectroscopy: • Electronic transitions (UV): involve the transition of electrons from Lowest Occupied Molecular Orbital (LOMO) to Highest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (HUMO) • Vibrational transitions (IR): occur due to the vibration of bonds in molecules • Rotational transitions (NMR): occur due to the flipping of protons
Electromagnetic Radiation
- Any moving electric charge is surrounded by an electric field and a magnetic field.
- Since all matter contains moving charged particles, all objects emit Electromagnetic (EM) waves.
