Introduction to Literature
- Literature is written works like poems, plays and novels that have excellence in form and expression
- "Literature expresses the feelings of people to society, to the government, to his surroundings, to his fellowmen and to his Divine Creator." (Brother Azurin)
- "Literature is anything printed, as long as it is related to the ideas and feelings of people, whether it is true, or just a product of one's imagination." (Webster)
- "True literature is a piece of written work which is undying. It expresses the feelings and emotions of people in response to his everyday efforts to live, to be happy in his environment and, after struggles, to reach his Creator." (Atienza, Ramos, Salazar and Nazal)
The Division of Literature
- Literature is divided into two main categories: prose and poetry
Prose
- Uses descriptive language like metaphors
- Does not depend on rhythm or rhyme
- Concise and straight to the point
- Purpose is to convey info, tell a story, or deliver message
Types of Prose
- Prose Drama: drama written in prose (paragraph form), meant to be acted
- Essay: author’s thoughts, feelings, expectations, or observations on an aspect of life
- Prose Fiction: invented or imagined, divided into novels and short stories
- Biography and Autobiography: biography is written by another, autobiography is written by the subject
- Letter: written message, less public than other writing
- Diary: daily written record of personal experiences, thoughts, activities, routines, and observations
- Journal: periodical, magazine, reflects or gives opinion on material read by the author

- Oral and written works by Filipinos
- Reflect various cultural traditions, experiences, and beliefs of Philippine society
- Written in different languages of the Philippines, including Spanish, English, and Chinese

Folk Speeches

- Tanaga: longer saying, rhyming scheme, deeper insights, and life lessons compared to proverbs
Folk Songs
- Appeal to emotions
