Study Notes

Introduction to the Flower

  • A flower is a highly specialized organ that produces fruit and ultimately, seeds.
  • It is responsible for the propagation of the plant.

Composition of the Flower

  • The flower consists of the receptacle, accessory sterile parts, and necessary fertile parts.
  • The floral parts are divided into two sets: non-sexual (accessory sterile) and sexual (necessary fertile) sets.
  • The non-sexual sets are the calyx and corolla, while the sexual sets are the androecium and gynoecium.

Anatomy of the Flower

Perianth

  • The perianth consists of the calyx (sepals) and corolla (petals).
  • Calyx:
    • Green in color
    • May be present or absent
  • Corolla:
    • Brightly colored
    • May be present or absent

Cohesion

  • If the calyx or corolla is free, it is poly- or aposepalous or apopetalous.
  • If the calyx or corolla is united, it is gamo- or synsepalous or synpetalous.

Examples

  • Rosa flower: apopetalous corolla
  • Datura flower: aposepalous calyx

Androecium

  • The androecium consists of stamens.
  • Stamens consist of filaments that carry anthers.
  • The anther is attached to the filament at its base.
  • Characteristics of androecium:
    • Elongated cells with thin and straight anticlinal walls
    • Spiny pollen grains

Gynoecium

  • The gynoecium consists of carpels or pistils.
  • Carpels/pistils consist of the ovary, style, and stigma.
  • Odor: aromatic apple-like
  • Taste: bitter mucilaginous
