    Study Notes

    Cloud Computing Definition

    • Cloud Computing is the delivery of computing services, including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and intelligence over the Internet, offering faster innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale.
    • It enables companies to rent access to anything from applications to storage from a cloud service provider, avoiding the upfront cost and complexity of owning and maintaining their own IT infrastructure.

    Cloud Computing Name

    • The metaphor of the cloud was borrowed from old telecoms network schematics, where the public telephone network (and later the internet) was represented as a cloud to denote that the location didn't matter.

    Deployment Models

    • Cloud services are available through three deployment models: Public Cloud, Private Cloud, and Hybrid Cloud.
    • Public Cloud:
      • Owned and managed by a service provider.
      • Made available to the general public or a large industry group.
      • Easy and inexpensive setup, as hardware, applications, and bandwidth costs are covered by the provider.
      • No wasted resources, as you pay for what you use.
    • Private Cloud:
      • Operated solely for an organization.
      • May be managed by the organization or a third party.
      • Limits access to enterprise and partner network.
      • Retains high degree of control, privacy, and security.
    • Hybrid Cloud:
      • Combines public and private cloud resources to support the organization's computing needs while maintaining compliance with industry regulation.

    Service Models

    • Cloud resources are provided in three service models: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS).
    • Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS):
      • On-demand delivery of computing infrastructure, including operating systems, networking, storage, and other infrastructural components.
      • Acts as a virtual equivalent to physical servers.
      • Relieves cloud users of the need to buy and maintain physical servers while providing the flexibility to scale and pay for resources as needed.
      • Popular examples include Digital Ocean, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Compute Engine (GCE).
    • Platform as a Service (PaaS):
      • Provides a computing platform where the underlying infrastructure (such as the operating system and other software) is installed, configured, and maintained by the provider.
      • Allows users to focus on developing and deploying apps in a tested and standardized environment.
