Study Notes
Game Overview
- Baseball is an American sport played with 2 teams of 40 players, with 9 players from each team taking to the field at a time.
- The objective is to score more runs than the opposing team by hitting the ball with a bat and running around the four bases on the field.
Scoring Runs
- A player must hit the ball between the foul lines and run across three bases and back to home plate to score a run.
- A hit outside the foul lines is considered a 'foul ball' and the batter is not allowed to run.
Pitching and Striking
- The pitcher's job is to get the batter out by throwing the ball into the strike zone, an imaginary box over home plate.
- A pitch through this area is considered a strike, as is a swing and miss by the batter.
- Three strikes mean the batter is out.
Getting Out
- A batter can be tagged out while running between bases if the opposing team throws the ball to the base before the batter reaches it.
- A batter can also be put out if the ball is caught in the air by the opposing team.
- Three outs end the half-inning, and the teams switch roles.
Game Structure
- A game is typically played over 9 innings, with each team getting a chance to bat and field.
- If the score is tied after 9 innings, the game goes into extra innings until a winner is determined.
Additional Rules
Home Run
- If a batter hits the ball out of the playing field between the foul lines, the batter and any runners on base score a run and can freely circle the bases.
Stealing Bases
- Runners can attempt to advance to the next base by stealing, but risk being caught out if the opposing team is prepared.
Tagging Up
- If the ball is caught in the air, runners must start from their current base before advancing to the next one.
Ground Rule Double
- If the ball is hit onto the ground and leaves the playing field, the batter automatically advances to second base.
Double Play
- This occurs when the defending team gets two outs on a single play, usually by throwing to one base and then another.
Designated Hitter (American League only)
- The designated hitter replaces the pitcher in the lineup and specializes in batting and scoring runs.
