Study Notes
Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a branch of Computer Science that aims to create computers/machines as intelligent as human beings.
- John McCarthy, the father of Artificial Intelligence, described AI as "The science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs."
- AI is a branch of science that deals with helping machines find solutions to complex problems in a more human-like fashion.
- AI is defined in different approaches by various researchers, including "Artificial Intelligence is the study of how to make computers do things which at the moment, people do better."
- Examples of AI applications include understanding spoken natural language, medical diagnosis, circuit design, learning, self-adaptation, reasoning, chess playing, and proving math theories.
Data, Information, and Knowledge
- Data is defined as symbols that represent properties of objects, events, and their environment.
- Information is a message that contains relevant meaning, implication, or input for decision and/or action.
- Knowledge is the cognition or recognition (know-what), capacity to act (know-how), and understanding (know-why) that resides or is contained within the mind or in the brain.
- Intelligence requires the ability to sense the environment, make decisions, and control actions, which involves knowledge, reasoning, and control generated from constituents of logic.
Artificial Intelligence Dimensions
- The philosophy of AI can be represented in three-dimensional models, consisting of logic, cognition, and computation in the x-direction, knowledge, reasoning, and interface in the y-direction, and correlated systems of physical origin such as language, vision, and perception in the z-direction.
- The x-y plane is the foundation of AI, and the z-direction consists of correlated systems of physical origin.
AI Applications
- Speech Recognition: Some intelligent systems are capable of hearing and comprehending language, handling different accents, slang words, noise in the background, and changes in human voice.
- Handwriting Recognition: The handwriting recognition software reads the text written on paper by a pen or on screen by a stylus, recognizing the shapes of letters and converting them into editable text.
- Intelligent Robots: Robots are able to perform tasks given by humans, using sensors to detect physical data from the real world, and learning from their mistakes and adapting to new environments.
Data Visualization
- Data visualization is the graphical representation of information and data, using visual elements like charts, graphs, and maps to provide an accessible way to see and understand trends, outliers, and patterns in data.
- The first and foremost objective of data visualization is to convey data correctly, by converting data values into visual elements in a systematic and logical way.
- Data visualization provides an excellent way to present data to non-technical audiences without confusion.
Internet of Things (IoT)
- IoT Definition: The internet of things (IoT) is a computing concept that describes the idea of everyday physical objects being connected to the internet and being able to identify themselves to other devices.
- Characteristics of IoT: IoT has various characteristics, including features, advantages, and disadvantages.
- Design of IoT: IoT design involves physical design and logical design, as well as IoT protocols, sensors, and actuators used in IoT.
