Study Notes
Introduction to Anatomy
- This presentation introduces the science of anatomy, focusing on the structures and development of the human body.
- The presenter, Dr. Anfal M. Elawady, is an assistant lecturer of anatomy and embryology at the Faculty of Medicine, Suez University.
- Contact information is provided: Mobile: 01030469231, Email: [email protected]
Course Structure
- Weekly schedule outlines lectures and labs.
- Topics covered include anatomical terminology, skeleton, joints, muscular system, skin, and fascia, GIT, respiratory + CVS, nervous, lymphatic, endocrine, and genitourinary systems, each with specific dates.
- Midterm exam and quizzes are scheduled.
Anatomy Subdivisions
- Gross anatomy:
- Regional: Studies the body region, including particular organs and tissues
- Systemic: Studies the body system by system (ex: cardiovascular system, respiratory system)
- Microscopic anatomy:
- Cytology: Studies the cell
- Histology: Studies tissues
- Developmental anatomy (Embryology): Studies prenatal growth (before birth)
Body Organization
- From smallest to largest: Cell → Tissue → Organ → Organ System → Organism
- Illustrated with an example: Cardiac Muscle Cell, Cardiac Muscle, Heart, Circulatory System
Anatomical Positions & Terms
- Anatomical position: Body is erect, facing forward, upper limbs by the side of the body, palms facing forward, thumbs lateral. Heels slightly separated, toes pointing forward.
- Various other positions (ex: supine, prone, right/left lateral decubitus)
- Directional terms (anterior/posterior, superior/inferior, medial/lateral, proximal/distal, superficial/deep).
Body Planes
- Vertical:
- Sagittal plane: Divides the body into right and left portions.
- Mid-sagittal (median): Equal right and left.
- Para-sagittal (paramedian): Unequal right and left.
- Frontal (coronal) plane: Divides the body into anterior and posterior portions.
- Sagittal plane: Divides the body into right and left portions.
- Horizontal:
- Transverse plane: Divides the body into superior and inferior portions.
- Oblique plane: Any plane that passes through the body at any angle other than a right angle.
Body Cavities
- Dorsal cavity: Cranial & Vertebral cavities
- Cranial: Contains the brain.
- Vertebral: Contains the spinal cord.
- Ventral cavity:
- Thoracic: Contains the heart, lungs and trachea.
- Mediastinum
- Pleural cavities (right/left).
- Pericardial cavity (around the heart).
- Abdominal cavity
- Pelvic cavity
- Abdomino-pelvic cavity: Abdominal and pelvic cavities combined and separated by the diaphragm.
- Thoracic: Contains the heart, lungs and trachea.
