- The internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) are different, but are often used interchangeably.
- Internet is a vast global network of computers connected physically via wires and other equipment.
- WWW is a collection of software used on the internet for sharing and linking hypertext documents and resources.
- Hyperlink is a reference to a document that can be accessed directly by the reader.
History of the World Wide Web
- The World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee while working at CERN in 1989.
- Berners-Lee developed the first web server, first web browser and Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).
- HTML was published in 1991 and the web browser was released publicly in 1993.
- This led to the development of many other web browsers.
First Webpage
- The first webpage was created by Tim Berners-Lee in August 6, 1991.
- It was initially used for sharing documents through the internet, using simple text and FTP (File Transfer Protocol).
- It was designed to be convenient for workplace use and acceptable in multiple browsers.
HTML & SGML
- HTML is derived from SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language).
- SGML denotes a markup language document that contains a set of tags which are based on a DTD (document type definition).
- SGML is not a document language but a metadata language.
- HTML is a standard markup language used for creating web pages.
What is the World Wide Web
- The World Wide Web (Web) is a network of information resources that can be accessed by the public.
- It uses the following mechanisms to do this:
- A uniform naming scheme to locate resources on the web (e.g., URIs)
- Protocols to access the named resources (e.g., HTTP)
- Hypertext to link information together.
