Study Notes
Internal Components of a Computer
- Internal components are essential parts that are installed within a computer, facilitating its operation and functionality.
Motherboard
- Also referred to as main board or "mobo," it serves as the backbone of a computer.
- Components like CPU, ROM chips, and various interface cards are connected to the motherboard.
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
- Known as a microprocessor or processor, it is the core element for data processing.
- Responsible for receiving input data, processing information, and executing instructions.
Heat Sink
- A metal device, equipped with cooling fins, used to dissipate heat from integrated chips, particularly CPUs.
Expansion Card
- Also called an adapter card, it enhances computer capacity by being inserted into motherboard slots.
DIMM (Dual Inline Memory Module) Slots
- Miniature circuit boards on the motherboard used to hold memory modules.
RAM (Random Access Memory)
- Memory modules that temporarily store data and programs during CPU processing.
- Data in RAM is volatile and lost when the computer is powered off.
Video Memory
- Memory utilized by the video controller, can be on a dedicated video card or part of system memory.
- When integrated with system memory, Windows allocates it specifically for video processes.
Hard Drive
- Also known as hard disk drive (HDD), it serves as the primary secondary storage of a computer.
- Utilizes magnetic or solid-state technology for data storage.
Power Supply
- Commonly referred to as power supply unit (PSU), it converts incoming power for the motherboard and other components.
- Located inside the computer case.
Dual-Voltage Selector Switch
- A switch located on the back of the computer case to adjust input voltage for the power supply.
- Accommodates either 115 V (USA) or 220 V (other countries) settings.
Form Factors
- Specifications defining the size, shape, and configuration of hardware components such as cases and motherboards.
ATX (Advanced Technology Extended)
- The prevalent form factor for modern computer systems, introduced by Intel in 1995.
- Provides improved spatial and resource efficiency compared to the previous AT form factor.
