Interferential Current (IFC)
- Biphasic balanced waveform, sinusoidal because of the mixing of 2 currents of different frequencies.
- Used only for pain relief.
- The intersection of 2 channels delivering current with 2 different frequencies produces pulses delivered as beats (bps).
Electrode Placement
- Quadripolar: 4 electrodes from 2 channels in an X pattern surrounding area of pain. ALWAYS for IFC to provide current mixing at the targeted tissue.
- Bipolar (Premodulated): 2 electrodes from 1 channel surround the target tissue. X pattern not required since current mixing occurred in the machine and the premodulated current is delivered to both electrodes.
- Bipolar (Premodulated) Advantage: ability to treat multiple areas simultaneously (neck and back), areas that can’t accommodate 4 electrodes safely (upper trap or small areas on hand or foot).
IFC Parameters
- Sweep: modulates frequency to prevent accommodation (1-10 bps, 75-150 bps). Better than constant beat frequency.
- Scan: modulates amplitude of currents to increase the size of the treatment area.
