Study Notes
Intellectual Property (IP)
- IP encompasses intangible creations of the human intellect
- These assets lack physical presence
- Examples include patents, copyrights, and trademarks
Types of Intellectual Property
- Patents:
- Grant exclusive rights to inventors for a limited time
- In return for publishing a detailed description of the invention
- Copyrights:
- Legal rights to literary and artistic works (books, music, films, drawings, etc.)
- Covers computer programs, databases, technical drawings
- Trademarks:
- Distinctive symbols, designs, or names identifying a specific product or service from its source
Copyright Protection
- Protects literary and artistic works
- Includes novels, poems, plays, articles, computer programs, musical compositions, films, and more
Types of Copyright Rights
- Economic Rights: Rights related to financial benefits from exploitation of the work (e.g., reproduction, distribution, performance, display, derivative works, digital transmission)
- Moral Rights: Protect the creator's association with their work (e.g., right of attribution, right to integrity)
Fair Use
- A legal exception in copyright law
- Allows limited use of copyrighted material without permission (e.g., education, research)
- Limited use is key; extensive use is unlikely to be considered fair use
Digital Divide
- Gap between access to technology for information and communication
- Expands to include financial and technical capabilities
- Factors include disparities in internet access, speed, devices, and digital literacy
Types of Digital Divide
- Access Divide: Socioeconomic differences impacting access to technology and internet
- Use Divide: Skills gap related to internet usage and digital literacy skills (generational differences also play a role)
