Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)

  • ICH is defined as "practices, representations, expressions, knowledge, skills-as well as the instruments, objects, artefacts, and cultural spaces associated therewith-that communities, groups and, in some cases, individuals recognized as part of their cultural heritage" (Art. 2)
  • ICH is traditional and living, transmitted from generation to generation, and constantly recreated by communities and groups in response to their environment, interaction with nature, and history
  • ICH provides a sense of identity and continuity to communities, groups, and individuals

Characteristics of ICH

  • Can only be defined as such when a community recognizes it as part of its heritage
  • Identification and definition of ICH rests with the communities, groups, and individuals that create, maintain, and transmit it
  • Manifests itself across all cultural domains

Cultural Domains

  • Oral traditions and expressions, including language
