Study Notes

Inquiries, Investigations, and Immersion

  • Timeliness and Relevance of the Topic refers to the social applicability and appropriateness of the topic to the current situation.

  • Limitations of the Subject refers to the topic’s contribution to a particular field or discipline.

  • Personal Resources refers to the researcher’s abilities, financial capacity, resources in terms of instruments, facilities, and time frame.

Choosing a Good Research Problem

  • A research topic should be original, specific, arouse intellectual curiosity, fill in a research gap, and be within the researcher’s interest.

  • A research topic should NOT be ambiguous, costly and ambitious, use ineffective research instruments, be completed beyond the given period of time, or be insignificant to the field of study or discipline.

Formulating an Effective Research Title

  • Richness of Available Resources or Supporting Evidences refers to the availability of needed resources as evidence for the topic.

  • Interest in The Subject Matter refers to an individual’s interest in a topic driven by his or her schema about it.

  • The title must be limited to 10 to 15 substantive words.

  • Conjunctions, prepositions, and articles are not counted.

Statement of the Problem

  • A general statement of the problem/objective is required.

  • Specific Research Questions must be indicated.

Scope and Delimitation of The Study

  • It sets the parameters of the study which narrow down the scope of inquiry.

  • It must answer the following parameters as much as possible:

    • What – the topic and the variables to be included
    • Why – the general objectives
    • Where – the specific locale
    • When – the time frame
    • How – research design, instrument, and methodology

Research Hypothesis

  • It states the concrete terms that a researcher expects to happen in the study.

  • Types of Hypothesis:

    • Null hypothesis indicates that there is no significant difference or relationship between specified populations or variables.
    • Alternative hypothesis states that there is a significant difference or relationship between specified populations or variables.

Conceptual Framework

  • It serves as the plan or the blueprint of the study.

Significance of The Study

  • It cites the benefits certain groups of persons will get from the outcome of the study.

Definition of Terms

  • It includes definitions of words operationally used in the study.

Selecting Relevant Literature

  • Literatures refer to a collection of published information or materials on a particular area of research or topic.

  • A literature review is a process of studying what has already been written on a particular topic.

  • Five Basic Criteria for Evaluating Information:

    • Accuracy
    • Authority
    • Coverage
    • Currency
    • Objectivity

Identifying the Problem and Asking the Questions

  • Parts of a Research Paper (Introduction):
    • Background of The Study serves as an overview of the research topic under investigation.

Goals of Literature Review

  • To demonstrate a familiarity with a body of knowledge and establish credibility.
  • To show the path of prior research and how a current project is linked to it.
  • To integrate and summarize what is known in an area.
  • To learn from others and stimulate new ideas.
