Study Notes
Lecture 2: Basic Concepts of Information Technology: Software
- Software is a set of instructions that tells a computer what to do.
- Software is stored on the hard drive, CD/DVD, etc., and loaded into RAM to run.
- Types of software include Operating System Software and Application Software.
Types of Software
- Operating System (OS): Special software that controls and operates the computer.
- Operating System (OS): Loads automatically when the computer starts up.
- Operating System (OS): Acts as a link between hardware and application software.
- Operating System (OS): Manages input/output instructions and allocates resources (processing and memory).
- Operating System (OS): Regularly updated with new versions and service packs to fix bugs.
- Operating System types: MS Windows, Apple Mac, Unix, Linux
Operating Systems (OS)
- Manages computer resources (memory and CPU) shared among programs.
- Provides an interface for humans to interact with the computer.
- Allows application programs to interact with computer resources.
- The core idea of an operating system is "sharing nicely" between different programs.
Application Software
- Solves specific problems and makes life easier.
- Can be used after the operating system is loaded.
- Must be compatible with the operating system.
- Examples of application software include Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Databases, Presentations, Photo Editing, Web Browsing, and Email.
Graphical User Interface (GUI)
- Allows users to visually interact with computers using windows, menus, icons, etc.
- Makes it easy for users and programmers to use and develop application software.
Examples of Applications
-
Word Processing: Typing text and creating documents
- Examples: MS Word, Wordpad, LaTeX editors, notepad
-
Spreadsheet: Allows text, numbers, and calculations in tables.
- Example: MS Excel
-
Database: Stores, manages, modifies, searches, and extracts large amounts of data.
- Examples: MS Access, MS SQL Server
-
Desktop Publishing: Creates drawings, graphics, and text in posters, newsletters, Ads, etc.
- Examples: MS Publisher, Adobe InDesign
-
Presentation: Creates presentations with slides and animations.
- Example: MS PowerPoint
-
Photo Editing: Editing photos.
- Example: Adobe Photoshop
-
Web Browsers: Access, download and search information on the Internet.
- Examples: Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Safari
-
Email: Sending and receiving email messages.
- Example: MS Outlook
-
Compilers (programming languages): Translate high-level languages (like C++) into low-level languages (like assembly language) so hardware can execute them.
Accessibility Features (Windows)
- Found in the Windows Ease of Access section of the Start Menu.
- Voice Recognition: Voice commands using search box.
- Text Reader: Text-to-speech option using search box.
- Screen Magnifier: Magnifies the screen using search box.
- On-screen keyboard: Virtual keyboard using search box.
