Study Notes
Information Systems Concepts
- Information is processed, manipulated, and interpreted data. It's organized data with inherent value beyond the raw data itself. Information is created by defining and organizing relationships among data.
- Certified Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt (CLSSYB): Characteristics of good information: Accurate, Accessible, Complete, Economical, Formatted, Flexible, Reliable, Relevant, Secure, Simple, Timely, and Verifiable.
- A system is a collection of components working together towards a common goal. It takes input, processes it, and produces output. It might contain one or more subsystems. Systems can be categorized as closed (independent) or open (interacting with other systems).
- An information system (IS) is a combination of people, hardware, software, communication networks, data resources, and policies involved in storing, retrieving, and disseminating information. - People rely on modern information systems for communication.
- Input: Capture data to be processed.
- Processing: Transformation of data to information.
- Output: Distribution of information.
Components of Information Systems
- Five key components: People, hardware, software, data, and networks.
- People (end users and IS specialists).
- Hardware (machines and media).
- Software (programs and supporting procedures).
- Data (raw facts, knowledge bases).
- Networks (communication media).
- Data resources are processed to produce various forms of information.
- Information processing includes input, processing, output, storage, and control.
Computer Resources
- A computer is an electronic device accepting input data, processing it with calculations and operations, and delivering results as output.
- Hardware: physical components like keyboards, monitors, storage devices, and the motherboard.
- Software: a set of instructions telling the computer what tasks to perform and how.
- Data: raw, unprocessed facts.
- Users: people who interact with the computer system.
Information Systems and the Decision-Making Process
- Information systems support business operations and managerial decisions.
- Examples of use in decision making include deciding on types of merchandise or investment decisions.
- Types of IS supporting operations and management:
- Transaction processing systems
- Process control systems
- Enterprise collaboration systems
- Management information systems
- Decision support systems
- Executive information systems.
Data and Databases
- Data: raw facts that may lack context or intention.
- Information: processed data with relevance, context, and purpose.
- Knowledge: information about relationships in an area or human perceptions & beliefs about a certain subject.
- Wisdom: explicit knowledge expressed in words or numbers, contrasted with tacit knowledge based on insights and intuitions.
- Big data: a large quantity of various data sets that grow constantly.
- A database is a structured collection of data organized for effective storage, retrieval, and management. Databases use tables with rows and columns, representing entities and their attributes. Database management systems help handle data by enabling addition, modification, and retrieval of data.
- Data types: commonly include numbers, text, boolean, date/time, currency, and paragraph text. Machine learning and data mining are increasingly used to derive information and insights from data.
Types of Software
- System software manages the computer's hardware resources, provides user interfaces, and allows software developers to create applications. Examples include operating systems like Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Application software performs specific tasks for users, divided into general-purpose (like word processors, spreadsheets) or function-specific (like accounting, CRM).
- Utility software is used for specific tasks like data sorting, file management, backups, and system maintenance, performing common tasks across installations.
- Cloud computing refers to computing resources, applications, and data storage accessed via the Internet.
- Virtualization enables a single computer to virtually function as multiple computers, supporting use of software in various systems.
Computer Software
- Operating System: The basic software that manages the hardware resources, provides a user interface, and facilitates application execution.
- Application Software: Softwares designed for specific tasks, such as word processing, spreadsheets, or specialized business applications.
- Utility Software: Softwares designed for managing and maintaining the system, such as data backup or security programs.
