Influential Kings and Queens of England

Throughout history, kings and queens have played significant roles in shaping societies and politics across various regions globally. King Henry VII began his rule after the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, ending two decades of civil war. He established Tudor dynasty with the marrying Elizabeth Plantagenet, who had been widowed three times previously. They became parents of Prince Arthur and Princess Margaret. Henry VIII ruled from 1509 to 1547. His reign saw the dissolution of monasteries, consolidating royal power over the Church of England. His six wives included Catherine of Aragon (married since 1509), Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Katherine Howard, and Catherine Parr.

Queen Elizabeth I reigned from 16th November 1558 until she died in March 1603. She was born into the House of Plantaganet through Henry VII and Elizabeth of York. Her father was Henry VIII, whereas her mother was Ann Boleyn. After the Dissolution of Monasteries under her half-brother Edward, lead her to become England's first Protestant queen. Under Elizabeth's rule, there was peace within England, though conflicts outside its borders. English colonies were set up in North America, and the navy and army were strengthened. A new gold coin, called 'the Angel', was introduced, and the country became more prosperous and powerful.

James I took the throne following the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. Born in Edinburgh Castle in Scotland, he inherited both the Scottish and English crowns when he ascended the throne. At one time, he even held all three crowns because Denmark also recognized him as king. During his reign, the English Parliament authorized English settlements in North America, including Virginia. This marked the beginning of British colonial expansion. In 1614, he issued the Book of Sport which encouraged sports such as archery, tennis, and riding horseback.
