Study Notes
Infant Sleep Patterns
- Newborns sleep approximately 17 hours out of 24, without a consistent day-night schedule. They feed every 1-3 hours and sleep afterward.
- Infants gradually become more active during the day and less at night. Light exposure and interaction during the day aid in developing a diurnal rhythm.
- Day-night sleep patterns generally emerge by four weeks and are usually established by 12 weeks of age.
- The National Sleep Foundation recommends specific sleep durations for different age groups: infants under 3 months (14-17 hours), 4-11 months (12-15 hours), and 12-24 months (11-14 hours).
- Infant sleep duration decreases from 71% of the day at birth to 50% by their first birthday.
Infant Sleep Stages
- Infant sleep differs from adult sleep. Infants have three sleep stages: active, quiet, and indeterminate sleep. Adults have four.
- Sleep stages are identified using muscle movements, heart rate changes, and brain waves.
- These sleep stages and their corresponding brain wave patterns change over the first year.
- Indeterminate sleep is most prevalent before birth and gradually decreases after birth, peaking within the first eight weeks (Tarullo et al., 2011).
- Active sleep, a proportion of overall sleep, resembles REM sleep in adults, but infants are more physically active during this stage.
- The percentage of active sleep decreases from 50% at birth to 25-30% at 12 months, gradually transforming into adult REM sleep after six months (Bathory & Tomopoulos, 2017).
Sleep Cycle Development
- Sleep cycles lengthen throughout the first year, enabling infants to stay asleep and awake for extended periods.
- The number of sleep-wake cycles decreases from birth to 12 months.
- A newborn may experience multiple sleep-wake cycles in a 24-hour period, while a 12-month-old typically has three or four major sleep/wake cycles.
