Study Notes
Industry 4.0
- The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) is propelled by cyberphysical systems, or intelligent computers
- 4IR is a recent concept, with Google searches for “Industry 4.0” surging after 2014
- 4IR build upon the third industrial revolution (digital revolution) which started in the 1950s and included computers, the internet, and other electronics
- 4IR builds upon 3IR to improve operational efficiency and create new products and services
- 4IR technologies are disrupting value chains with four foundational disruptive technologies:
- Connectivity, data, and computational power (e.g. cloud technology, blockchain, sensors)
- Analytics and Intelligence (e.g. advanced analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence)
- Human–machine interaction (e.g. VR, AR, robotics, autonomous guided vehicles)
- Advanced engineering (e.g. additive manufacturing, renewable energy, nanoparticles)
