Indian Navy's Re-designation
- India became a Republic on 26 January 1950, marking the re-designation of the Royal Indian Navy as the Indian Navy.
- The Indian Naval Ensign (Naval Flag) was adopted on 26 January 1950.
Early Acquisitions
- The Indian National flag replaced the Union Jack on 15th August 1947.
- Post-independence, the first cruiser INS Delhi and three 'R' class destroyers (Rajput, Ranjit, and Rana) joined the Indian Navy.
- In the late 1950s, the second cruiser INS Mysore and two Frigates (INS Trishul and Talwar) were acquired.
Fleet Expansion
- The acquisition of anti-Submarine Frigates (INS Khukri, Kuthar, Kirpan) and Anti-Air Craft Frigates (Brahmaputra, Beas, and Betwa) expanded the Indian Naval Fleet.
- The addition of these ships led to the constitution of the Indian Naval Flotilla into a Fleet.
Air Defense and Strike Capability
- The Air Craft carrier INS Vikrant was commissioned in February 1961, adding an integral Air Defense and strike capability to the Indian Navy's Fleet.
