Chandragupta I

While there appears to be some confusion regarding who exactly Chandragupta I refers to within the context of these empires, it seems that Chandragupta I might refer to either Chandragupta Maurya or Chandragupta Vikramaditya of the later period. Chandragupta Vikramaditya was a Gupta king noted for extending his rule beyond the Ganges and Yamuna rivers into South India, where he defeated the Pallavas. However, it is worth noting that there is some debate among scholars about the existence of Chandragupta Vikramaditya as a distinct figure separate from Candragupta II.

Chandragupta II

Chandragupta II, also called Vikramaditya, has been described as possibly the greatest king of the Gupta dynasty. He came to the throne after the death of his father, Samudragupta, sometime between AD 380 and 395 CE. During his reign, he extended the boundaries of the empire further south as far as the Kaveri River, bringing Malaya and Andhra Pradesh under his control.
