    Fundamental Rights

    • Fundamental Rights are guaranteed by the Indian Constitution and are essential for the development of individual personalities.
    • There are six fundamental rights granted to citizens of India.

    Right to Equality

    • Articles 14-18 of the Constitution deal with the Right to Equality.
    • Five rights are included:
      • Equality before the Law (Article 14): laws must be applied without discrimination.
      • Exception: does not mean absolute equality, but rather equality among people similarly situated.
      • Prohibition of Discrimination (Article 15): no discrimination on grounds of religion, sex, caste, etc.
      • Exception: state can make special provisions for weaker sections of society.
