IMSBC Code (International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargo Code)

  • A mandatory regulation for carrying solid cargo in bulk form, replacing the BC Code
  • Ensures safe stowage and shipment of solid bulk cargoes
  • Part of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 (SOLAS Convention), chapter VI
  • Provides information on dangers associated with shipping certain types of solid bulk cargoes and instructions on procedures to be adopted
  • Primary hazards associated with shipment of solid bulk cargoes include structural damage, loss of stability, and chemical reactions
  • Adopted on 4 December 2008, and entered into force on 1 January 2011
  • Does not cover the carriage of grain in bulk, which is covered by the International Code for the Safe Carriage of Grain in Bulk (International Grain Code, 1991)

IGC Code (International Code for the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk)

  • Provides guidelines for gas tankers on operational, construction, and safety aspects
  • Specific to the carriage of LPG/LNG cargoes
  • Mandatory under SOLAS chapter VII since 1 July 1986
  • Applies to ships of all sizes, including those under 500 gross tonnage, engaged in carriage of liquefied gases with a vapour pressure exceeding 2.8 bar absolute at a temperature of 37.8°C
  • Aims to provide an international standard for the safe carriage by sea in bulk of liquefied gases and certain other substances
  • Prescribes design and construction standards of ships and equipment to minimize risks to the ship, crew, and environment
