Study Notes
Reading comprehension is a vital part of learning English language skills. It involves understanding texts written in simple sentences, complex passages, storybooks, magazines, newspapers, advertisements, letters, and postcards. To improve your ability to understand what you're reading, it's important to learn some basic techniques:
-
Visualize. As you read a passage, try to create mental images of events, objects, people, places, and so forth. If there is a description of something happening, imagine it taking place before your eyes like a movie scene. This will help you remember more of the text and make it easier to follow along with.
-
Understand the meaning behind each sentence. Pay attention when reading if the author uses any figurative speech—metaphor, simile, personification, alliteration, assonance, consonance—and how they affect the overall tone of the piece. Figurative speech adds color and variety to writing by making comparisons between things that normally wouldn't be compared, such as comparing two ideas using metaphors.
-
Recognize key information and details. Look for specific facts, numbers, names, dates and other details mentioned in the passage. These can help you form opinions about characters, situations, and conflicts within stories. They also serve important purposes in nonfiction texts where readers rely heavily on evidence presented through facts, figures, examples, statistics, quotations from experts, etc..
-
Connect the dots. After finishing a chapter or section of a book, take time to review highlights you found interesting or significant. Consider if these elements fit together into a coherent picture based on what was stated earlier in the storyline. If different pieces seem unrelated, think deeper about why this might be true and come up with possible explanations.
In addition to developing good habits while studying English literature, practicing vocabulary exercises daily helps build a strong foundation for expanded comprehension skills later on. By working hard at improving these areas, you will gain confidence in comprehending longer paragraphs, larger sections, whole chapters, entire books even without having any formal instruction in reading comprehension!
