Study Notes
Impression Tray Fabrication
- Impression trays are used to prevent distortion of the material while setting and being removed from the mouth.
- Custom trays are made by outlining the cast, blocking out undercuts, placing a wax spacer, and then molding Triad material.
- The Triad tray is then cured in an oven and trimmed for final use.
- Cold cure, Visible light cure (VLC), and Heat cure acrylic are the most common materials for custom trays.
Wax Spacer Placement
- Boucher recommends placing a 1 mm layer of baseplate wax on the dental cast, excluding the posterior palatal seal (PPS) area.
- When trimming the wax, leave it slightly extended in the retromolar pad and posterior palate.
Triad Tray Procedure
- A single layer of Triad tray material is placed on the wax cast, pressing into the lingual (mandibular) or palatal (maxillary) area first to prevent air pockets.
- The material is then firmly pressed over the ridge and buccal areas.
- A handle is molded onto the tray, starting at the crest of the ridge on the anterior portion and angled at 45 degrees, long enough to accommodate the thumb.
- The tray is cured on the cast for 3 minutes and then placed waxed side up in the curing unit for 2 minutes.
