Study Notes

Importance of Gases in Air

  • Nitrogen: Used to make fertilizers and explosives
  • Oxygen: Used for respiration and supports burning, also causes rusting
  • Carbon Dioxide: Used for photosynthesis, putting out fires, making dry ice, and making breads and cakes rise. Also used to add fizz to beverages.
  • Water Vapour: Used to make rain clouds, takes part in many chemical reactions in plants and animals, transport materials in plants and animals, and removes waste from plants and animals.

Other Gases

  • Neon: Used to make bright lights; glows when electricity flows through a tube
  • Argon, Krypton, Xenon: Used in light bulbs because they do not react with metals, even when they get very hot.
  • Helium: Used to fill decorative balloons and weather balloons and also deep-sea diving mixtures because it is very light. Can be mixed with oxygen, nitrogen, or other gases as a safer alternative to pure oxygen
  • Hydrogen: Used to make margarine and fertilizers. Does not exist in our atmosphere beyond the space that we normally consider air.
