Study Notes
Food Waste
Approximately one-third of the food produced worldwide is wasted. This is an alarming statistic considering that food waste emits methane, a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon dioxide. Food is wasted at multiple stages, from spoiling shortly after leaving farms to being rejected based on size or shape standards. In Europe, about half of food waste occurs before it reaches households.
Food waste has a significant impact on the environment. If it were a country, the greenhouse gas footprint of food waste would rank third globally behind the United States and China. A study found that up to half of food waste could be attributed to inefficient packaging size and design. Sufficient packaging, designs that facilitate consuming all contents easily, and smaller portions of bulk fresh foods can reduce packaging waste and food waste simultaneously.
Carbon Footprint
Reducing food waste is crucial for reducing carbon footprint, which is currently estimated to account for about 30% of man-made emissions. Food waste disposal releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas, which significantly contributes to climate change. When food waste ends up in landfills, it rots, producing methane, which is many times more damaging to the climate in the short term than carbon dioxide. If food waste were eliminated, it could reduce global emissions by 8%.
Plastic Pollution
While plastic packaging can contribute to plastic pollution, addressing plastic waste alone won't resolve the climate crisis. Food waste is actually a bigger contributor to climate change than plastic waste. Eliminating plastic packaging in certain products like bread can lead to increased food waste due to shorter shelf life. Therefore, a balance must be struck between minimizing plastic waste and reducing food waste through smart design and careful decision-making about materials.
