Where does the term 'immunity' originate from?

The term 'immunity' is derived from a Latin word (immunitus) which referred to the protection from legal persecution offered to the roman senators.

What is immunology?

The science that deals with study of body’s defense factors and mechanisms acting to remove or eliminate harmful agents entering the body.

What is the immune system?

A system which is involved in the prevention and control of disease.

Define antibody (Ab).

A type of glycoprotein molecule, also called immunoglobulin, produced by a special cell called B-lymphocyte that binds to antigen.

What is an antigen (Ag)?

A substance that is capable of reacting with the products of a specific immune response.

What is the difference between non-specific (innate) immunity and specific (adaptive) immunity?

Non-specific immunity has immediate response, is not antigen specific, has no memory cells, and involves cells like phagocyte cells and NK cells. Specific immunity has a lag time between exposure and response, is antigen specific, has memory cells, and involves cells like B-lymphocyte and T-cell (Natural Killer cell) lymphocyte. It also involves blood proteins like antibodies.

What are the factors that affect immunity?

Racial differences, genetics, age, hormones, sex, and nutrition.

What are the types of specific immunity?

The types of specific immunity are natural specific immunity (passive and active) and artificial specific immunity (passive and active).

What is the role of serology in immunology?

Serology studies the reactions that occur between antigens and antibodies outside the body.

Give an example of artificial specific immunity (active type).

Vaccination like tetanus toxoid is an example of artificial specific immunity (active type).
