Study Notes

Female Reproductive Imaging

  1. Hystero-Salpingography is a contrast examination of the uterus and fallopian tubes, performed mid-cycle to investigate infertility.
  2. The procedure is carried out by injecting a contrast medium into the cervical canal after preliminary films are taken.
  3. The patient is positioned supine with knees and hips flexed or buttocks raised on a sandbag.
  4. A cold speculum is used to grip the anterior lip of the cervix, and the injection cannula is inserted into the cervical canal.
  5. Follow-up radiographs are taken 15 and 45 minutes after the injection.
  6. Pelvimetry and Cephalometry are used when there is doubt about the relative sizes of the maternal pelvis and fetal head.
  7. The Colcher Sussman method uses a metal ruler mounted on a small stand that can be rotated in a full circle and adjusted for height.
  8. The ruler is centered to the gluteal fold and placed cm below the upper border of the pubic symphysis.
  9. The ball method consists of AP and lateral projections and is used to disclose any displacement of the fetus.
  10. The AP position is taken with the patient in an erect position to utilize the effect of gravity upon the fetus.
  11. The lateral projection is taken with the patient in a true lateral position, and the cassette is placed crosswise to include the fundus of the uterus.
  12. The pelvic outlet superoinferior projection is used to demonstrate the outlet of the pelvis.
