Illuminated manuscripts emerged in the Carolingian Renaissance around AD 790 and flourished in monasteries throughout Europe. They were often commissioned by wealthy patrons such as kings and nobles who wanted to display their wealth and prestige.

The creation of illuminated manuscripts involved several stages and techniques:

1. Writing: Monks would write out the text using quills dipped into ink made from soot mixed with gum arabic or glue. Parchment made from sheepskin was used because it could withstand moisture without rotting, unlike paper which degrades when wet. Books were usually copies of older works due to limited access to writing materials.

Decoration: After the words were written, artists added decorations called initials – large letters or designs at the beginning of chapters or sections – to make reading easier and emphasize section transitions. Gold and silver leaves were used extensively, along with pigments made from natural sources like plants and insects. Artists also employed various methods to create light effects, shading, and depth.

3. Miniatures: Miniatures were small illustrations placed within the pages of the manuscript on vacant spaces beside columns or between lines of text. Some manuscripts contain hundreds of them, each representing a moment in the story told in the text above. For example, in the 13th century Book of Hours of Catherine of Cleves, there is a depiction of Christ being baptized.

4. Binding: Once completed, manuscripts were bound in leather covers with metal bosses decorating their surfaces. Many bound volumes contained multiple texts, each on separate sheets of parchment.
