Board of Pharmacy
- Illinois Board of Pharmacy has 11 members, appointed by the governor.
- Eight members must be licensed pharmacists in good standing in the state, with at least 5 years of experience after licensure. A Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or an accredited college of pharmacy degree is required for these members.
- One member must be a pharmacy technician.
- Two public members must be voting members and not engaged in healthcare provision.
- Members can serve a maximum of 10 years (two full terms).
- The board convenes quarterly.
- The general public can attend board meetings.
- Pharmacists need 5 years' experience after licensure in Illinois.
Licensure Requirements
- Pharmacist:
- Application Fee: $75
- New Graduates: Must complete a first professional pharmacy degree program at a degree-granting institution.
- Transfer/Reciprocity: Applicants from another jurisdiction must successfully complete the required examination or endorsement process. Application fee is $200.
- Foreign Graduates: Must have a first professional degree in pharmacy from outside the US or its territories. Must pass the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Certificate (FPGEE) exam. Must provide scores of TOEFL (≥ 550), TSE (≥ 50), or a combination score (≥ 213) of TOEFL iBT + speaking section score of ≥ 26 or an approved equivalent.
- Continuing Education: 30 hours required every two years. One hour of sexual harassment prevention is required.
- Degree/Education: Graduation from a board-approved school of pharmacy.
- Examinations: NAPLEX and IL MPJE
- Pharmacy Technician:
- Application Fee: $40
- Requirements: Must be 18 years of age, have good moral character, graduation from accredited pharmacy technician training, and pass an examination (NCCA approved).
- CE Hours: 20 hours every two years.
- Additional Requirements: One hour of pharmacy law and one hour of patient safety.
Pharmacy Physical Requirements
- During closure, the public and non-licensed employees are prohibited from accessing the filling and dispensing area.
- During non-operational hours, the pharmacy area must be secured and inaccessible to non-licensed personnel.
- Lockable doors, walls, or electronic security are examples of possible security measures as approved by the division.
