Study Notes
Iditarod Dog Sled Racing
- Iditarod mushers can start the race with up to 16 dogs pulling the sled and must finish with at least 5 dogs.
- Mushers take good care of their dogs to prevent illness or injury during the race.
- If a dog gets sick or injured, mushers can leave it with veterinarians and continue the race with their remaining dogs.
Forces in Dog Sled Racing
- Each dog in a dog sled team exerts a force on the sled, and the forces add up to a large force on the sled.
- The sum of all forces acting on an object is the net force on the object.
Forces and Directions
- Forces have both strength and direction.
- When forces act in the same direction, their strengths are added.
- When forces act in opposite directions, their strengths are subtracted to find the net force.
Examples of Forces and Net Force
- When multiple people push a van in the same direction, the net force is the sum of their individual forces.
- When forces act in opposite directions, the net force is the difference between the forces, and its direction is the same as the larger force.
- In a scenario where a dog pulls a leash with a force of 75 N and a girl pulls back with a force of 50 N, the net force on the leash is 25 N in the forward direction.
Predicting Motion with Net Force
- Finding the net force is useful for predicting the effect of all forces on an object at once.
- The net force can be used to predict if and how the object's motion will change.
- In a scenario where a train is slowed down by brakes, the net force on the train is negative, causing the train to slow down.
