Child Abuse
- Types of abuse:
- Physical Abuse • Beating, hitting, cutting, shooting, burning, and rape • Use of power and physical strength to harm the victim • Responding inappropriately to queries about the child's condition
- Neglect • Failure to provide personal care, cleanliness, health care, social contact, education, and supervision • Symptoms: Afraid to go home, vacant stare, will not cry, and manipulative behavior
- Psychological Abuse • Verbal assaults, threats, sarcasm, criticism, and humiliation • Putting the victim down, making them feel bad about themselves
Patterns of Abuse

Physical Abuse • Patterns of bruise or welts at varying stages of healing • Bald patches on the scalp, laceration, burns, and unexplained fracture or dislocation • Withdrawn or aggressive behavior • Incongruence between explanation and injury

Sexual Abuse • Pain and itching on genitals, bruised and bleeding genitals, and stains on underwear • Difficulty walking or sitting, and unwillingness to change or participate in physical education classes • Change in school performance
Partner Abuse
- Types of abuse:
- Isolation • Controlling what the partner does, who they see, and where they go
- Intimidation • Putting the partner in fear by using looks, actions, gestures, or loud voice
- Using male privileges • Treating the partner like a servant, making all big decisions, and acting like the master
- Threats • Making and/or carrying out threats to hurt the partner emotionally
- Using children • Making the partner feel guilty about the children
- Economic abuse • Controlling the partner's finances, taking their money, and giving them an allowance
- Emotional abuse • Putting the partner down, making them feel bad about themselves
- Sexual abuse • Making the partner engage in sexual acts against their will
Nursing Intervention
- Interview the parent or child separately in privacy
- Don't probe for information or try to prove child abuse, be non-judgmental and do not give advice
- Treat injuries and inform parents of requirements to report suspected child abuse
- Determine seriousness of battery and call proper authority
- Provide referral for assistance and therapy
