    • Workers need to be able to source, process, and present data accurately and quickly
    • Workers need to choose and use the correct ICT tools for the job

    The Computer

    • A computer's power depends on the CPU speed and performance, memory size, storage amount and type, and graphics card.
    • A powerful PC can process more data, execute more tasks, and run more programs faster than a less powerful one.
    • Computers process information in a cycle: take input, process it, produce output and store it.
    • Computers communicate with other computers.

    Types of Computers

    • Laptops/Notebooks: Small, portable computers ideal for work and entertainment. They use miniaturized parts for lower power consumption.
    • Tablets: Portable computers with touch or pen-sensitive screens made for quick, small-scale computing. They have special operating systems and long battery life.
    • Smartphones: Perfect examples of digital convergence combining many device features on one device. A smartphone includes operating systems, large screens, and built-in data modems (3G, HSDPA, 4G/LTE).
    • Desktops: Multi-purpose electronic devices.
    • Servers: Computers that provide services or resources to other computers. They are more powerful than client computers.
    • Dedicated Devices (e.g., ATMs, GPS): Designed for one specific task and aren’t considered computers

    Protecting Your Information

    • Hardware theft is about more than the replacement cost.
    • Data stored on the computer may not have backups.
    • Information may be sensitive or private.
    • Portable devices are easily lost or stolen
    • Companies sometimes disable USB ports to protect data.
    • Social engineering tricks try to manipulate people.
    • Ways to protect hardware from theft: record serial numbers, use ultraviolet markers, install hidden security software, use cable locks, and lockable cabinets.

    Power Settings

    • Computers should conserve power and 'sleep' or hibernate when not used.
    • Setting up power plans helps manage computer power use.
    • UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies) protect against power surges/spikes/outages.

The Role and Value of ICT in the Workplace

    • Workers can work wherever they have access to a computer or the internet.
    • Communication becomes easier and more effective.
    • Vast amounts of data can be stored and processed for better decisions.

    • Students learn to use computers for studying and research.
    • Students get familiar with various software packages.

    Additional Points

    • Phablets: Devices that are between tablets and smartphones. They have larger screens than phones.
    • Hybrid laptops/tablets: Laptops that can transform into tablet form.
