Types of Sentences

  • A sentence can be classified into four main categories: Simple, Compound, Complex, and Compound-Complex sentences
  • Simple Sentences: contain only one independent clause
    • Examples: I go to school, She eats breakfast
  • Compound Sentences: contain two or more independent clauses joined by a conjunction
    • Examples: I go to school, and I study English, She eats breakfast, but he eats lunch
  • Complex Sentences: contain an independent clause and one or more dependent clauses
    • Examples: When I get home, I eat dinner, Because I'm tired, I'm going to bed
  • Compound-Complex Sentences: contain two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses
    • Examples: I went to the store, and when I got there, I bought some milk, Because I was hungry, I ate a sandwich, but I didn't eat a salad

Tenses of Sentences

  • Sentences can be classified into three main tenses: Present, Past, and Future
  • Present Tense: used to describe an action that is happening now
    • Examples: I am studying English, She eats breakfast every morning
  • Past Tense: used to describe an action that happened in the past
    • Examples: I studied English yesterday, She ate breakfast yesterday morning
  • Future Tense: used to describe an action that will happen in the future
    • Examples: I will study English tomorrow, She will eat breakfast tomorrow morning

  • Declarative Sentences: statements that provide information
    • Examples: The capital of France is Paris, The sun rises in the east
