Study Notes
- Herrings were a cheap and popular protein staple in Europe and around the world for many years.
- From around 1910, herring populations in the north Atlantic were huge and Icelandic fishermen started catching and selling them in massive quantities.
- Without refrigeration, the fish had to be preserved almost as soon as they were caught.
- Thousands of female seasonal workers from all over Iceland travelled to fishing ports like Siglufjorður (or Siglo) to process the catches.
- The Herring Girls cleaned, sorted, filleted, and packed the herring in barrels of salt water, or brine.
- Working outside in all weathers, the work was difficult and dirty, with routine shifts of 24 or even 36 hours.
- Children as young as seven joined in, helping their mothers.
The Good Times
