Study Notes
ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs)
- ICAO publishes standards and recommended practices for contracting states.
- Standards are legally binding for Contracting States and recommendations are for the rest of the world.
- Annexes cover various aspects of aviation, including:
- Entry of cargo (Annex 9)
- Aerodrome design (Annex 14)
- Dangerous goods carried in aircraft (Annex 18)
Other Important Conventions
- The Tokyo Convention relates to third-party injury on the ground.
- The Rome Convention deals with hijacking.
- The Warsaw Convention and its amendments cover the limitations of operator responsibilities for passengers and cargo.
Freedoms of the Air
- The first freedom of the air allows for overflight only.
Air Traffic Control
- A flight plan is required for all IFR flights and for all VFR flights in controlled airspace.
- An ATC clearance must be obtained prior to entering controlled airspace.
- Pilots must notify ATC of any changes in estimated arrival times (ETAs) that exceed 5%.
Aircraft Navigation and Air Traffic Services (ATS)
- Aircraft with anti-collision lights are to show them at all times.
- Red lights can be seen by the pilot on a normal PAPI-defined glide path (Precision Approach Path Indicator).
- An aircraft on a temporary visit to a dedicated aerodrome of a member state will be exempt from customs duties for a period determined by the state.
- Pilots are not allowed to use the indent function on their SSR (Secondary Surveillance Radar) unless instructed by ATC.
Altimetry and Airspace Classification
- Transition Level is published on every approach and landing chart for every airfield.
- After landing, the altimeter is set to 1013.2 hPa, and this indication is known as aerodrome elevation.
- Bangladesh Airways operates in Class C airspace.
- Bangladesh does not have Class A or Class F airspace.
Bangladesh Aviation Specific Information
- The initial approach altitude for all types of instrument approaches for runway 14 of HSIA (Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport) is 3000 ft.
- Emergency standby frequency in Bangladesh is 121.5 MHz.
- The runway length for HSIA International Airport is 3200 meters.
- The lower limit of Dhaka control zone is GND (ground).
- The upper limit of Dhaka TMA (Terminal Maneuvering Area) is FL 145 (flight level 145).
- Chittagong control zone is a C-type airspace.
- PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) consists of 4 pairs of lights.
- The call sign for an Area Control Center is "Control".
