Sexual Dysfunction Disorders
- Female Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder is characterized by absent or reduced sexual interest or arousal, as manifest by at least 3 of the following symptoms:
- Absent or reduced interest in sexual activity
- No or reduced sexual or erotic thoughts or fantasies
- No initiation of sexual activity or unreceptive to a partner's attempts to initiate
- Absent or reduced sexual excitement or pleasure during sexual activity
- Absent or reduced sexual interest or arousal in response to internal or external sexual or erotic cues
- Criterion A has persisted for at least 6 months and can be specified as Lifelong Type, Acquired Type, Generalized Type, or Situational Type, with a current severity of Mild, Moderate, or Severe
Erectile Disorder
- Characterized by marked difficulty in obtaining or maintaining an erection during sexual activity
- Criterion A has persisted for at least 6 months and can be specified as Lifelong Type, Acquired Type, Generalized Type, or Situational Type, with a current severity of Mild, Moderate, or Severe
- Factors contributing to Erectile Disorder include low oxytocin levels, low serotonin and dopamine levels, performance anxiety, and stress
Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder
- Characterized by persistent or recurrent difficulties with one or more of the following:
- Vaginal penetration during intercourse
- Marked vulvovaginal or pelvic pain during vaginal intercourse or penetration attempts
- Criterion A has persisted for at least 6 months and can be specified as Lifelong Type, Acquired Type, Generalized Type, or Situational Type, with a current severity of Mild, Moderate, or Severe
Delayed Ejaculation (Orgasm)
- Characterized by marked delay or infrequency or absence of ejaculation
- Criterion A has persisted for at least 6 months and can be specified as Lifelong Type, Acquired Type, Generalized Type, or Situational Type, with a current severity of Mild, Moderate, or Severe
- Factors contributing to Delayed Ejaculation include low thyroid or testosterone levels, birth defects, injury to pelvic nerves, and retrograde ejaculation
Female Orgasmic Disorder
- Characterized by delayed or infrequent or absent orgasm or markedly decreased intensity of orgasm after a normal sexual arousal phase
- Criterion A has persisted for at least 6 months and can be specified as Lifelong Type, Acquired Type, Generalized Type, or Situational Type, with a current severity of Mild, Moderate, or Severe
- Factors contributing to Female Orgasmic Disorder include damage to genital sensory or autonomic nerves or pathways, low serotonin levels, and stress
Treatment and Interventions
- Pharmacotherapy: SSRIs, sildenafil, Levitra, Cialis, and injection of vasodilating drugs
- Behavioral Therapy: Squeeze Technique, Stop, Start, or Pause Procedure
- Psychotherapy: Providing basic education about sexual functioning, altering deep-seated myths, increasing communication, sensate focus, and nondemand pleasuring
