Study Notes
The Senses
Eyes
- The back of the eye has a layer of light-sensitive cells called the retina
- The retina detects light and sends messages to the brain via the optic nerve
Ear
- Detects sounds as vibrations that pass through the air
- Vibrations are magnified by the ear and messages are carried to the brain by the auditory nerve
Nose
- The inside of the nose is lined with cells that can detect different chemicals
- We learn to associate different smells with familiar things within our environment
- Information is sent from the nose to the brain along the olfactory nerve
Tongue
- Detects chemicals in the foods that we eat
- Passes information to the brain
