Human Reproductive System
- Reproduction is the process of producing new individuals of the same kind, essential for life's continuation.
- Reproduction occurs sexually (involving gametes) or asexually (without gametes).
- Asexual reproduction involves the parent organism or part of it, creating new organisms. A simple example is binary fission in Amoeba. Budding, in hydra involves the growth of a new individual on the parent body.
- Sexual reproduction involves two parents and the combination of male and female gametes. Higher organisms, like humans, reproduce sexually.
Patterns of Reproduction
- Asexual reproduction - Reproductive units can be any part of the parent organism, varying in size from the whole parent to small fragments.
- Sexual reproduction - Involves specialized sex cells (gametes - sperm and egg) that normally unite during fertilization to form a fertilized egg (zygote). This zygote develops to become the offspring.
Male Reproductive System
- Primary organs: Testes (singular: testis), produce sperms.
- Accessory organs: Sperm ducts (vas deferens), carry sperms. Accessory glands (seminal vesicles, prostate and bulbourethral glands) produce seminal fluid. Penis, transfers sperms to the female. Urethra, pathway for sperm and urine.
- Testes: Oval organs housed in the scrotum. Contain seminiferous tubules (where sperm production occurs), and interstitial cells (produce testosterone).
- Seminiferous tubules: Produce sperms.
Female Reproductive System
- Primary organs: Ovaries, produce ova (eggs).
- Accessory organs: Oviducts (Fallopian tubes), transport eggs. Uterus, housing growing embryo. Vagina, receives the male penis during copulation. Vulva, external genitalia.
Menstrual Cycle
- The period of a female's reproductive life, typically about 28 days.
- Cycle stages:
- Menstrual phase: Shedding of the uterine lining, 3-5 days.
- Follicular phase: Uterus lining thickens, egg develops, 5-12 days.
- Ovulatory phase: Egg is released, 13-14 days.
- Luteal phase: Uterus prepares for possible pregnancy, 15-28 days.
Fertilization and Development
- Fertilization: Fusion of sperm and egg nuclei (zygote formation).
- Implantation: Embedding of the developing embryo (blastocyst) into the uterine wall.
- Pregnancy: Nourishment of developing embryo provided by the placenta. It develops in the uterus during this period.
- Parturition: Expulsion of the foetus (baby) during birth.
Twins
- Fraternal twins: Develop from two separate eggs fertilized by two different sperms.
- Identical twins: Develop from a single fertilized egg that splits into two separate embryos.
