Study Notes
Structure of the Eye
- The eye has a dark center called the pupil, which regulates the amount of light allowed in.
Functions of the Eye
- The lens, located behind the pupil, focuses light.
- The retina, the inner layer, transforms focused light into nerve impulses that travel to the occipital lobe of the brain for processing.
Retina Composition
- The retina has layers of nervous tissue called cones and rods.
- There are approximately 6 million cones and 120 million rods in each eye.
Cones and Rods Functions
- Cones are more sensitive in light and are responsible for color and sharpness of vision.
- Rods function better in dim light and are helpful in night vision.
Optic Disc/Blind Spot
- A small area of the retina has no cones or rods and doesn't produce a visual image, known as the optic disc or blind spot.
- This area is the entry point for major blood vessels of the eye and where the optic nerve crosses from the brain into the eye.
Eye Abbreviations
- OD: Right eye (oculus dexter)
- OS: Left eye (oculus sinister)
- OU: Each eye (oculus uterque)
- PERRLA: Pupils equal, round, and reactive to light and accommodation
- VA: Visual acuity
- VF: Visual field
Test your knowledge about the anatomy of the human eye, including its components like the pupil, lens, and retina. Learn about the functions of these structures in processing light and transmitting visual information to the brain.
